3 Ways You Can Keep Your Carpets Looking Newer for Longer

The OW Carpet Care Guide

The need to keep our carpets and rugs clean and inviting can result in a lot of time-consuming cleaning and expense. To keep them looking as good-as-new it may seem like your best option is to keep pets, beverages and dirty shoes as far away from them as possible. But wait. Before you banish family and friends or hide one of your most useful decorative pieces in your home, try these top tips from Oriental Weavers, a global leader in carpet and rug manufacturing. Below we share how to keep costs low while keeping your carpets and rugs looking newer for longer.

The Dos of Cleaning your Carpet:

1- Vacuum Regularly – 3 times a week

How often you vacuum, and the intensity/ duration of each session is the first thing you need to be aware of. Experts at Oriental Weavers advise that you vacuum frequently used carpets and rugs at least 3 times a week to keep dirt and dust away. Think of the family room, your child’s room, and the hallway rug you walk over daily. Save weekly vacuuming for decorative rugs and carpets that aren’t as frequently used. This will ensure that your carpet fibres and tufts remain upright and intact.

The right way to vacuum:

+ Start from the centre of the carpet working your way outwards.

+ Slow forward and backward motion however don’t overuse the vacuum.

+ Use a low suction setting on Tufted carpets [link to tufted selection] Remove the rotating brush attachment to reduce wear and tear.

+ Use a rotating brush head will help get tough dirt and debris out of non-woven felt materials

2- Blot spills and mud stains don’t scrub!

We tend to get frantic when we’ve spilled something on a crisp clean carpet, and that usually lends itself to vigorous scrubbing. Instead of using a hard bristle brush that will wear out fine threads and damage your carpet, use the blot method instead..

Perfecting the Blot:

+ Clean it immediately. Don’t wait for it to dry out and mix in with any dust or dirt. That’s how stains evolve.

+ Use a dry white cloth or towel. This will avoid colours from your cloth mixing with your carpet/rug.

+ Firmly pat down covering the spilled liquid. Repeat until you feel all the liquid is absorbed.

+ Start with the outside of the spill working inwards to minimise spreading.

3- Use water in moderation

Avoid using hot water and detergent as a solution to clean any stains or dirt. Use water in moderation. Aim for slightly damp instead of wet. Soaking your carpet can result in residual odours and damage.

How to effectively clean with water:

+ Use lukewarm water.

+ When using specialised carpet shampoo or other non-chemical cleaning aids, don’t apply directly to the carpet.

+ Pre-test your cleaning mix on a small area to ensure that no discolouration happens.

Regular gentle cleaning is the most effective way to keep your carpets and rugs looking newer for longer. It will save you time and expense, allowing you to enjoy them for longer.
